Can I Apply for GATE in a Different Branch than B Tech – The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a highly competitive examination that opens doors to various postgraduate programs, scholarships, and career opportunities in engineering and technology.

One common question that often arises among engineering aspirants is whether they can apply for GATE in a different branch than their B.Tech or undergraduate engineering discipline.

In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the eligibility criteria for GATE, possibilities, limitations, and strategies for applying with a different branch of B.Tech.

1. Understanding GATE Eligibility

Before delving into the possibilities and limitations of applying for GATE in a different branch, it’s essential to understand the GATE eligibility criteria, which play a crucial role in determining who can appear for the examination.

1. Examination Eligibility Criteria Based on Educational Qualification

The GATE eligibility criteria primarily revolve around educational qualifications. Following are the key eligibility criteria for GATE:

Eligibility CriterionDetails
Qualifying DegreeA Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology (B.E./B.Tech) or a postgraduate degree in Science.
Year of QualificationFor B.E./B.Tech candidates, completion of the degree by the final year of the program or earlier.
Minimum MarksThere is no minimum aggregate percentage requirement for GATE eligibility.
Age LimitThere is no age limit to appear for the GATE examination.

2. Clarification on Applying with a Different B.Tech Branch

The GATE eligibility criteria do not explicitly state that candidates must possess a specific B.Tech branch or specialization to apply for the examination.

This flexibility allows candidates with different B.Tech branches to consider appearing for GATE in a branch other than their undergraduate discipline.

2. Possibilities and Limitations

While the GATE eligibility criteria provide flexibility, there are certain possibilities and limitations to consider when applying for GATE with a different B.Tech branch:

1. Exploring the Options for Applying with a Different B.Tech Branch

  1. Aligned Branches: Candidates from B.Tech branches closely related to their desired GATE discipline have a higher chance of eligibility and success. For example, a candidate with a B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) may choose to appear for the Electrical Engineering (EE) GATE paper, which aligns with their background.
  2. Additional Preparation: For candidates considering a GATE paper significantly different from their B.Tech branch, additional preparation is essential. It may require extensive self-study, coaching, or online courses to bridge the knowledge gap.
  3. Master’s Programs: Some candidates opt for master’s programs in their desired GATE discipline before appearing for the exam. This approach allows them to acquire the necessary background and knowledge.

2. Clarifying Cases Where Branch Change May Not Be Allowed

While GATE offers flexibility, there are cases where candidates may face challenges or limitations when applying for a different branch:

  1. Ineligible Disciplines: Some GATE papers have specific prerequisites or eligibility criteria that candidates from unrelated B.Tech branches may not meet. For instance, certain papers may require a B.Tech in a particular branch as a prerequisite for eligibility.
  2. Competitive Nature: GATE is highly competitive, and candidates from the respective discipline often have an advantage due to their specialized knowledge. Candidates from unrelated branches should be prepared to compete with candidates who have a more relevant educational background.
  3. Preparation Time: Adequate preparation time is essential for candidates applying with a different branch. They may need to invest more time in understanding the core concepts and syllabus of the chosen GATE paper.

3. Discussing the Challenges and Considerations in Applying with a Different Branch

Applying for GATE with a different B.Tech branch can be challenging, but it’s not impossible.

Here are some key considerations and challenges to keep in mind:

Challenges and ConsiderationsPossible Solutions
Knowledge Gap: Candidates may lack foundational knowledge in the chosen GATE discipline.Self-study, online courses, coaching, and thorough study of the GATE syllabus can help bridge the gap.
Competition: Candidates from the respective discipline may have a competitive edge.Intensive preparation, solving previous years’ papers, and mock tests can level the playing field.
Limited Seats: Some institutes may have limited seats for candidates from different branches.Explore a variety of institutes and programs to increase the chances of admission.
Master’s Programs: Pursuing a master’s program in the desired discipline is time-consuming.Candidates can consider this option if they have the time and resources for additional education.

3. Can I Apply for GATE in a Different Branch than B Tech?

Yes Absolutely, you have the flexibility to do so.

The GATE exam authorities do not impose any restrictions on the branch you can select for your GATE exam.

This means that even if you have completed your B. Tech in one branch, you are still eligible to apply for GATE in a different branch of your choice.

4. Is it Possible to do B Tech and M Tech in Different Branch?

Yes, it’s possible to pursue a B.Tech and M.Tech in different branches. You may choose a different branch for GATE.

Many universities offer this flexibility, allowing students to explore diverse fields of engineering during their academic journey.

This option broadens horizons and fosters interdisciplinary learning in the world of technology and engineering.

5. Can Mechanical Student Write CSE GATE?

Yes, a mechanical engineering student can write the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam.

GATE eligibility is not restricted to one’s undergraduate branch, providing students with the opportunity to explore other engineering disciplines and career paths through this competitive examination.

6. Can I Apply GATE in Different Branch than B Tech ? So that I can Get Selected in a PSU?

PSUs recruiting through GATE have two kind of restriction for a candidate :

(1) B. E. / B. Tech stream (in which branch candidate have done B. E. / B. Tech. course)
(2) GATE paper / subject (in which GATE paper he/she appeared)

Here important point is that they need a candidate with both of these qualification matched correctly.

When you will go through any notification of any PSU which recruit through GATE then you will find that they mention GATE paper for particular post as well as B. E. / B. Tech. degree for that particular post.

Those both things match with applicant qualification then only applicant would be eligible for that particular post.

We can understand this query using any PSUs recruitment process. Here we are taking example of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC).

S. No.Name of PostMinimum Essential QualificationGATE Paper
1.AEE (Civil)Graduate Degree in Civil Engineering with minimum 60% marks.Civil Engineering (CE)
2.AEE (Electrical)Graduate Degree in Electrical Engineering with minimum 60% marks.Electrical Engineering (EE)
3.AEE (Electronics)Graduate Degree in Electronics/ Telecom/ E&T Engineering with minimum 60% marks OR Post Graduate Degree in Physics with Electronics with minimum 60% marks.Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC)
4.AEE (Instrumentation)Graduate Degree in Instrumentation Engineering with minimum 60% marks.Instrumentation Engineering (IN)
5.AEE (Mechanical)Graduate Degree in Mechanical Engineering with minimum 60% marks.Mechanical Engineering (ME)
6.ChemistPost Graduate Degree in Chemistry with minimum 60% marks.Chemistry (CY)

From the above table we can easily understand that for being selected as Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of Electrical Engineering in Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) a candidate have to completed his/her B. E. / B. Tech degree in Electrical Engineering and also qualify GATE paper with the same subject paper.

If he/she obtain marks in GATE exam greater than the cut-off decided by ONGC for this particular post they will call the candidate for Group discussion / Personal interview.

This is true for all other PSUs too which are recruiting through GATE exam. Candidates can check all other PSUs selection criteria & minimum education qualification required for a particular post by visiting below link.

There are many candidate who are confused in selection of GATE paper. Candidates want to switch from their graduation subject to other subject for getting admission into M. Tech. program as well as get selected in PSUs recruiting through GATE.

There are some restriction in selection of different subject, subject other than your graduation subject for both M Tech program as well as for PSUs recruiting through GATE.  We have explained both cases in detailed manner.
