GATE 2023 Marking Scheme

GATE 2023 question paper would contain questions of two different types in various papers:

(i) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) : These questions are objective in nature, and each will have a choice of four answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct answer(s).

(ii) Numerical Answer Questions (NAQ) : For these questions the answer is a real number, to be entered by the candidate using the virtual keypad. No choices will be shown for this type of questions.

* No negative marking for numerical answer type questions.

GATE 2023 Question Design

The questions in a paper may be designed to test the following abilities:

(i) Recall : These are based on facts, principles, formula or laws of the discipline of the paper. The candidate is expected to be able to obtain the answer either from his/her memory of the subject or at most from a one-line computation.
(ii) Comprehension : These questions will test the candidate’s understanding of the basics of his/her field, by requiring him/her to draw simple conclusions from fundamental ideas.
(iii) Application : In these questions, the candidate is expected to apply his/her knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning.
(iv) Analysis and Synthesis : In these questions, the candidate is presented with data, diagrams, images etc. that require analysis before a question can be answered. A Synthesis question might require the candidate to compare two or more pieces of information. Questions in this category could, for example, involve candidates in recognising unstated assumptions, or separating useful information from irrelevant information.

GATE Marking Scheme FAQs

What is the marking scheme for GATE?

The GATE exam has a total of 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks. The marking scheme for GATE is as follows:

  • For one mark MCQs: 1/3 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.
  • For two marks MCQs: 2/3 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.
  • There is no negative marking for numerical answer type (NAT) questions.

How is the total score for GATE calculated?

The total score for GATE is calculated by adding the marks obtained in all sections of the paper. The GATE score is calculated out of 1000.

  • The GATE score is then normalized using a formula to account for variations in difficulty levels across different papers.

  • Is partial marking available in GATE?

No, partial marking is not available in GATE. For MCQs, if a candidate selects more than one answer option, or if no answer is selected, it will be treated as a wrong answer and negative marking will be applied.

Is there negative marking in GATE for NAT questions?

No, there is no negative marking for numerical answer type (NAT) questions in GATE.

How is the normalization of GATE scores done?

The normalization of GATE scores is done to account for variations in the difficulty levels of different papers.

The GATE score is normalized using a formula that takes into account the mean and standard deviation of the raw scores of all candidates who appeared in that particular paper.

How are the GATE scores used for admission to institutes?

The GATE scores are used by various institutes for admission to postgraduate programs such as M.Tech, M.E, and PhD.

The scores are used to shortlist candidates for further rounds of selection such as interviews, group discussions, and/or written tests.

Can the GATE score be used for recruitment in public sector units (PSUs)?

Yes, some public sector units (PSUs) use the GATE score as a parameter for recruitment of engineers in various disciplines. However, the score cut-off and other selection criteria may vary for different PSUs.

Is the GATE scorecard valid for more than one year?

No, the GATE scorecard is valid for one year only. The scorecard is usually released a few weeks after the declaration of results.

What is the difference between GATE score and GATE rank?

GATE score is a numerical value that represents the relative performance of a candidate in a particular paper.

GATE rank, on the other hand, is the relative position of a candidate in the list of all candidates who appeared in that particular paper.

The GATE rank is usually used for admission to institutes that require rank-based selection criteria.

How is tie-breaking done in GATE?

In case of a tie between two or more candidates, the following criteria are used for tie-breaking in GATE:

    • The candidate with a higher score in the subject-specific section of the paper is given a higher rank.
    • If the tie persists, the candidate with a higher score in the general aptitude section is given a higher rank.
    • If the tie still persists, the candidate with an earlier date of birth is given a higher rank.

    1. Dear sir,
you have said above that there are only 10 Questios based on numerical type. From where you got this information. Tell me.
      thank you.
