It is always better to start preparation for any exam as soon possible.
First/second year of college is for understanding basics of engineering so try to understand the basics. If you strong your basics then you would get benefited in future bcz of this.
So from GATE point of view :
(1) strong your basics in first/second year and
(2) prepare general aptitude and engineering mathematics in this period bcz it the part of GATE exam and contain 30% weightage out of 100 % marks of gate exam.
(3) Along with this now start preparing those subjects which you are currently studying in 2nd year according to the GATE syllabus. This preparation will not only help you in GATE 2018 but also help in your semester exam.

we can give you some suggestion for your preparation time table :
(1) make plan as per time availability in a day for study exclude other times like daily routine work etc.
(2) Always study in three level anything :
1. easy
2. medium
3. Hard

First follow easy. Like you are going to study a chapter. Note down all the important topic from exam point of view and study introductory of every topic then move to next chapter and so on. It will not take much time and you will complete your whole syllabus at least once then medium than hard.

Make a time table for a whole day, for a week, for a month and for a year for GATE 2016. Stick to the time table. Must include time for revision in each time table.

Study step by step, topic to topic, No one complete their GATE syllabus in a day.
Make a time table for day, week, month and for whole year. Try to complete syllabus as soon as possible as that you can practice more problems later.

If you are studying well in your B. Tech course then you need not to worry much about GATE exam.
You have completed GATE coaching it will surely help you to get good rank in GATE exam.

First of all analyse GATE previous 20-30 years papers.
So that you have a good idea of what kind of question they asked in GATE exam and specially from which areas. Those areas which asked mostly study in little depth in those. Also which subjects contain more ratio in GATE marks, prepare deeper them than other subjects. Don’t forgot to prepare Mathematics and General Aptitude along with your Technical subjects these subject contain 30% marks in 100% GATE marks and will play a key role in your ranking in top 100.

As you mentioned you have 30 hours every week for preparation. So first of all make a plan for GATE exam its almost 1 year to GATE exam from now. First make a plan for 6 months which must include preparation time table week wise and month wise. In this 6 month you have to complete your whole syllabus including deep study of all subjects. After 6 months start solving as much as possible questions from standard books and join as much as possible GATE test series so that you can do better perform in GATE exam. Remember always take a place for revision in your plan, revision is most important part of preparation.
