GATE
NORMALIZED MARKS FORMULA
[2023-2024]
GATE Normalized Marks Formula – Nowadays in GATE exam for some papers may be conducted in multi-sessions. Hence, for these papers, a suitable normalization is applied to take into account any variation in the difficulty levels of the question papers across different sessions.
The normalization is done based on the fundamental assumption that “in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions”.
This assumption is justified since the number of candidates appearing in multi-session papers in GATE exam is large and the procedure of allocation of session to candidates is random.
Further it is also ensured that for the same multi-session paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same order of magnitude.
Based on the above, and considering various normalization methods, the committee arrived at the following formula for calculating the normalized marks for the multi-session papers.
After the evaluation of the answers, normalized marks calculated corresponding to the marks obtained by the candidate. GATE exam score will be calculated based on the normalized marks.

GATE 2024 Normalized Marks Formula FAQs
What is the GATE 2024 normalized marks formula?
The GATE 2024 normalized marks formula is used to adjust the raw marks obtained by candidates across different sessions and papers. The exact formula and normalization process are determined by the GATE conducting authority.
Why are the GATE marks normalized?
The GATE marks are normalized to account for variations in the difficulty level of different papers and sessions. This ensures fairness in the evaluation process and allows for accurate comparison and ranking of candidates.
How is the normalization of GATE marks done?
The normalization of GATE marks is typically based on statistical methods. The specific normalization process can vary depending on factors such as the number of candidates, the average performance, and the standard deviation of marks in each paper.
Can you provide an example of how GATE marks are normalized?
Let's consider two different sessions of the same GATE paper. If the first session is found to be slightly more difficult, the raw marks obtained by candidates in that session may be scaled up during the normalization process.
On the other hand, if the second session is relatively easier, the raw marks obtained by candidates in that session may be scaled down.
How does the GATE normalized marks formula affect the final scores?
The GATE normalized marks formula adjusts the raw marks to account for the variations in difficulty level across different papers and sessions.
The normalized marks are then used to calculate the GATE score, which is used for ranking and selection purposes.
Is the GATE normalized marks formula the same for all papers?
The GATE normalized marks formula may vary for different papers. The normalization process is specific to each paper and is determined by the GATE conducting authority.
Are the normalized marks reflected in the GATE scorecard?
No, the GATE scorecard typically displays the raw marks obtained by candidates rather than the normalized marks. However, the normalized marks play a crucial role in calculating the GATE score, which is mentioned on the scorecard.
Is it possible to predict the normalized marks based on the raw marks?
Predicting the exact normalized marks based on raw marks is challenging, as the normalization process is not publicly disclosed.
The GATE conducting authority holds the responsibility of normalization and maintains the confidentiality of the process.
How can candidates understand the impact of normalization on their scores?
The impact of normalization on individual scores can only be known when the GATE result is declared and the normalized marks are released.
Candidates can then compare their raw marks with the normalized marks to assess the effect of normalization on their scores.
Where can I find information about the normalization process for GATE 2024?
The detailed information about the normalization process for GATE 2024 is typically provided in the official GATE brochure or notification released by the GATE conducting authority.
Candidates are advised to refer to the official sources for accurate and up-to-date information.
