How is IIT JAM Rank Calculated?

IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc.) is an entrance exam conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for admission to M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., and other postgraduate programs in Science, Technology, and Mathematics.

The IIT JAM exam is conducted once a year, usually in February, and the results are announced in March.

The rank of a candidate in the IIT JAM exam is calculated based on the marks obtained by the candidate in the exam.

The IIT JAM exam is a computer-based test with multiple-choice questions, and each question carries one or two marks. The total marks for the exam are 100, and the exam is conducted for a duration of three hours.

The formula for calculating the rank of a candidate in the IIT JAM exam is as follows:

Rank = (N – P)/N x 100

Where, N is the total number of candidates who appeared for the exam in that particular subject P is the position of the candidate in the merit list based on his/her total marks obtained in the exam

For example, if a candidate secured 75 marks in the IIT JAM exam, and the total number of candidates who appeared for the exam in that particular subject was 1000, and the candidate’s position in the merit list was 100, then the rank of the candidate would be calculated as follows:

Rank = (1000 – 100)/1000 x 100 Rank = 90

Therefore, the rank of the candidate would be 90.

It is important to note that the IIT JAM rank is calculated based on the total marks obtained by the candidate in the exam, and not on the basis of the percentile score.

The percentile score is calculated based on the performance of all the candidates who appeared for the exam, and it is used for shortlisting candidates for admission to the postgraduate programs.

In conclusion, the rank of a candidate in the IIT JAM exam is calculated based on the marks obtained by the candidate in the exam.

The formula for calculating the rank takes into account the total number of candidates who appeared for the exam in that particular subject and the position of the candidate in the merit list based on his/her total marks obtained in the exam.
